Depending on the stage of bowel cancer, treatment may differ from case to case. Surgery is the most common means of treating bowel cancer. In this instance, a colectomy is performed to remove the primary cancer. Some patients may require chemotherapy and radiation therapy post-surgery to help reduce the chance of cancer returning. This is more common with patients with stage 2 bowel cancer, but may not always be the case.
